Bafa Wubu Zou Gu
Zuǒ Gù (左顧) means "Look Left" or "Attend to the Left."
左 (Zuǒ) = left
顧 (Gù) = to look after, to attend to, to be aware of
Together, Zuo Gu means to be aware of, turn toward, or guard the left side.
Concept in Tai Chi:
Zuo Gu is not just turning the head to the left — it refers to:
Adjusting the body and footwork to respond to a threat or opportunity on the left side.
Maintaining awareness and readiness in all directions, especially lateral movement.
It emphasizes lateral stepping, shifting, and rooting while preserving balance and intention.
Martial Application:
Used when an attack or movement comes from the left flank.
In practice, this may involve:
Turning the waist and shifting the weight leftward.
Stepping or pivoting to face a left-side opponent.
Redirecting or countering with appropriate techniques (e.g., Peng, Lu, Cai).
It represents 360-degree situational awareness, crucial in Tai Chi’s martial logic
