Bafa Wubu, An
An (按) is the fourth of the Four Primary Hands (Si Zheng) and is usually translated as "Push."
Meaning of An (按):
An means to press down or to push forward, but not with brute strength — it uses internal energy and whole-body coordination.
Energetic Concept:
An uses the ground connection and rebound force — the body sinks (yin) and then springs upward and forward (yang) in a wave-like motion.
The key is to sink the qi (chi) and issue from the root. The hands push, but the power comes from the legs, directed by the waist, and expressed through the arms.
Application:
Used to uproot or send an opponent away after breaking their structure.
The opponent is unbalanced first (with Lu, Ji, or Cai), and then An releases energy into them, often causing them to step or fall back.
