Bafa Wubu, Cai

Cai (採) — often translated as "Pluck" — is one of the Four Corner Energies (Si Yu), which complement the Four Primary Hands.

Meaning of Cai (採):

  • Cai means to pluck, like plucking fruit from a tree — it involves a quick, downward, pulling motion, usually with a spiral or diagonal path.

  • It is a disruptive energy, used to break the opponent’s root, off-balance them, or open a gap in their structure for a follow-up technique.

    Energetic Concept:

Cai uses sudden, focused pulling force to extract and control the opponent’s center.

Unlike a simple yank, Cai combines sticking, listening, and quick directional changes, often exploiting tension or overextension in the opponent.

The energy spirals and often comes with a drop in your own center of gravity, helping to unbalance the other.

    Application:

Used to pull the opponent off balance — for example, after they've extended a strike or push, you might attach and pluck them downward while moving them off their base.

Commonly followed by elbow (Zhou) or shoulder (Kao) techniques to capitalize on the opening.

Also used to break grips or interfere with the opponent's structure or momentum
