Bafa Wubu, Peng
In Tai Chi (Taijiquan), "Peng" (掤) is one of the most fundamental and important energies (jin, 勁). It’s not just a technique or posture, but an internal quality or dynamic structure that underlies most movements in Tai Chi.
What Is "Peng" Energy?
Peng (掤) is often translated as:
"Ward off"
"Expansive energy"
"Upward and outward buoyant force"
But it’s more than just pushing someone away. Peng is a kind of resilient, springy energy — like a well-inflated ball that resists compression. It's often described as “inflated,” “rounded,” or “balloon-like” force that maintains structure and neutralizes incoming pressure. How Peng Is Applied Practically:
In application, Peng is often seen in movements like "Ward Off Left/Right" in the Tai Chi form.
If someone pushes you, instead of resisting head-on or collapsing, you use Peng to redirect and absorb the force — maintaining structure without tension.
It's useful both in yielding and in issuing force (fajin).
