Bafa Wubu Zhong Ding
Zhōng Dìng (中定) is the fifth and central step, often translated as "Central Equilibrium" or "Balanced Center."
中 (Zhōng) = center, middle, central
定 (Dìng) = stability, steadiness, calmness
Together, Zhōng Dìng means "Central Stability", or "Maintaining a calm, balanced center."
Concept in Tai Chi:
Zhōng Dìng is not a step in space, like forward or back — it refers to a state of dynamic balance and upright posture, no matter which direction you move.
It represents the vertical axis and mental-physical equilibrium that must be maintained during all stepping and movements.
Martial Application:
Without Zhōng Dìng, you lose balance when stepping, striking, or yielding.
It allows you to absorb and issue force with control.
Even when shifting weight, the center of gravity stays internally stable — this is essential for:
Rooting under pressure
Maintaining structure
Issuing explosive force (Fa Jin)
